Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2026

Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2026 delivered pure magic – From sunrise mass ascents to the glowing spectacle of Nightglow, the skies over Ashton Court were filled with lots of colour, character, and international crews bringing new shapes to Bristol.

The 2026 Bristol International Balloon Fiesta delivered one of its most successful and well‑attended events in recent years, drawing an estimated 300,000 visitors to Ashton Court between 7th–9th August. Now in its 48th year, Bristol’s iconic and free to attend balloon fiesta returned to it’s natural home at the Ashton Court Estate to celebrate the city’s heritage in the hot air ballooning world.

The theme for the 2026 fiesta was “Sky’s The Limit,” with the skies above Bristol seeing five mass ascents, almost 400 balloon flights, and three world record attempts.

The weather forecast leading up to the event was promising with the continued hot and dry spell dominating the UK, and this proved to be accurate through the weekend with balloons being able to launch in to the Bristol skies. Sunday evening’s mass ascent was unfortunately cancelled for safety reasons due to the increasing wind speeds.

Hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes together with many special shapes took to the air, including Slick the Dragon and Panasonic Battery from MJ Ballooning and the debut and first flight of the brand new suitcase balloon from sendmybag.com, a scarecrow shape all the way from the USA, and screwdriver from Germany.

Once the excitement of the mass launches had subsided it was time to turn attention to the arena for the tethering of a number of older and special shape balloons. Alongside the flying special shapes, a number of older examples, such as Thomas the Tank Engine, Piggy Bank and Ordnance Survey Maps from Bristol Balloon Collectors and the Orient Express locomotive were tethered in the arena to the delight of the attending public.

Although the majority of balloons were from the UK, the Fiesta also included some from Belgium, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland and the USA.

Continuing on from it’s introduction at the 2025 event, in conjunction with Great Western Railway, the Flight Control interactive and real-time tracking system displayed total distance flown, landing locations, and flight times for the launching balloons, and was available on the fiesta website and displayed on a large screen at the edge of the flight arena.

The ever popular nightglow displays on Friday and Saturday nights once again proved to be firm crowd favourites with in excess of 20 balloons inflating after the sun had set to synchronise their burners to music.

Aside from the mass balloon launches and the balloon tethering, further action in the arena was provided by model aircraft displays, model balloons, the rockets motorcycle team and on Friday and Saturday the spectacular RAF Falcons parachute team descending in to the arena from 7,000 ft.

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2026 proved again to be a triumph, a visually spectacular and colourful event, providing a rich and opportunistic photographic event. With record crowd attendance and the varied family activities, aside from the hot air balloons, the Fiesta continued to cement its place as one of Europe’s premier ballooning events.

For aviation photographers with an interest in hot air ballooning, it remains an unmissable highlight of the summer calendar. Mark your calendars for Friday 13th to Sunday 15th August 2027.
