Discover Sweden’s Hidden Treasure: Svedinos Bil- och Flygmuseum
On Sweden’s picturesque west coast, near the village of Ugglarp stands one of Scandinavia’s most remarkable collections of historic vehicles and aircraft. Svedinos Bil- och Flygmuseum is more than a museum, it is the realisation of the passion of one man for preserving the history of various types of transportation. With an impressive collection of vintage automobiles, historic aircraft, motorcycles, engines, and memorabilia, the museum is an absolute hidden gem and a must visit destination for vehicle and aviation enthusiasts.
The collection was created by Lennart Svedfelt, who performed under the stage name Svedino as a stage magician and illusionist. He financed and built his collection through the earnings from his entertainment career. As the collection grew, the location and storage of the exhibits became an issue, with the museum site in Ugglarp subsequently being purchased. The museum officially opened on 20th June 1961, with a collection of 35 vehicles.
Throughout the years and with various expansions of the site, the space grew from the initial 500 square metres, to over 3000 square metres. At the time it was Scandinavia’s first museum of its kind and gradually the collection was expanded to include aircraft exhibits. Svedfelt was the first private collector to be allowed to buy decommissioned aircraft from the Swedish Air Force.
Automotive History Collection
Svedinos Bil- och Flygmuseum is home to approximately 100 fascinating vintage cars, ranging from elegant early automobiles to rare models rarely seen elsewhere. Visitors to the collection can explore a fascinating timeline of automotive development, discovering vehicles from renowned manufacturers alongside lesser-known brands.
Aviation Collection
The museum’s aviation collection is equally as impressive. Around 40 aircraft showcase the various elements dramatic development of flight, from early wood-and-fabric airplanes to powerful modern jet aircraft. Highlights include historic military and civilian aircraft that illustrate key milestones in aviation technology.
More Than a Museum
Beyond its extensive collections of vehicles and aircraft, Svedinos Bil- och Flygmuseum provides a welcoming museum experience for visitors. The museum features a café where guests can enjoy refreshments while taking in the relaxed atmosphere. The museum also offers a virtual 3D tour on its website, allowing visitors to experience parts of the collection before planning a trip. We thoroughly recommend a visit to this fantastic museum if you are in the area.
Today the museum is run by the founder’s son, Bjorn Svedfelt and his wife, who South West Aviation Photographers would like thank for their assistance.
